Non-Lodgment Advice

Do I need to lodge a tax return or not?

The Non-Lodgment Advice form explained

You may not need to file a tax return if your income was $18,200 or less in the most recent fiscal year AND no tax was deducted from it.

But take care: This does not imply that you may put off paying your taxes. Either a tax return or a “non-lodgment advice” form must be filed by everyone.

Not sure whether you need to file a tax return? Read on…

Did you earn less than $18,200, but you still paid tax?

If the answer is affirmative, you should file a tax return immediately. You should always file a tax return if you paid tax on any income you received during the fiscal year. Additionally, if your income was below $18,200, you probably will get a full refund of the taxes you paid.

What is a Non-Lodgment Advice?

If you do not need to file a tax return, you should send the ATO a non-lodgment advisory (commonly known as an NLA). This paper informs the ATO that you will not be filing a tax return this year and prevents them from flagging you as having an unfiled tax return. This is crucial because the ATO has the authority to levy fines or penalties on unfiled tax returns.
